Shedding some light on sarcasm, irony, satire and parody

Image

Satire occurs in literature to bring attention to a cause and bring individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement.  Satire may be meant to be more constructive than humorous. Satire’s job is to expose problems and contradictions, and it’s not obligated to solve them. its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon and as a tool to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society. Satire can be used to “make people laugh and then make them think”

Satire can cover irony, sarcasm, burlesque, parody, exaggeration, juxtaposition and double entendres. It can be directed toward one individual, a whole country or even the world. It is sometimes serious, acting as a protest or to expose, or comical when used to poke fun at something or someone.

Satire examples from media include:

“Weekend Update” from Saturday Night Live

Irony

In irony, words are used to show the opposite of the actual meaning. The three kinds of irony are:

Verbal irony – – What you say is different from the words you use.

Situational irony — compares what is expected to happen with what actually does happen.

Dramatic irony –– uses a narrative to give the audience more information about the story than the character knows.

Here is an example of irony from The Simpsons television show, spoken by the character Sideshow Bob, “I’m aware of the irony of appearing on TV in order to decry it.”

Parody

A parody is also called a spoof, and is used to make fun or mock someone or something by imitating them in a funny or satirical way. Parody is found in literature, movies, and song.

A good example or a parody is the song  “I lost on Jeopardy” by Weird Al Yankovic, which is a parody of the song “Our Love’s in jeopardy” by Greg Kihn.

Sarcasm

Sarcasm is a sharp or cutting remark  which is really meant to really drive a point home. It can be meant to give pain and can include irony. On the other hand, sometimes you can make a point and still be funny. Here are some examples of sarcasm that are humorous, but still get their meaning across.

Paul Newman said, “It’s always darkest before it turns absolutely pitch black.”

Steven Bishop remarked, “It’s a catastrophic success” and “I feel so miserable without you, it’s almost like having you here.”

Oscar Wilde wrote, “I am not young enough to know everything.”

Groucho Marx used many sarcastic one-liners in his comedy. Here are a few:

“Marriage is the chief cause of divorce.”

“I didn’t like the play, but then I saw it under adverse conditions – the curtain was up.”

“I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.”

Blessed by the BEST

Image

This article is about the book that I am writing called Blessed by the BEST and is dedicated to Brother Ed and the Long Beach RESCUE MISSION

Image

Brother Ed Robinson is a manager for the bed guests of the Long Beach Rescue Mission and is the man behind this book Blessed By the Best. I feel that I have been blessed by the best to have known someone like Brother Ed and I describe in detail how he enriched my life. I stayed at the mission as a bed guest from December 2013 until early April 2014. I looked forward to Brother Ed’s daily sermons which were held in the chapel at 5:30pm just before dinner time. His sermons provided us with guidance and the inspiration to look forward to another day. Brother Ed always had a smile on his face and an upbeat attitude on life even though he had been diagnosed with STAGE-1 bone cancer in January 2014. He often discussed his experiences of living on the street in South-Central Los Angeles before coming to the mission himself as a bed guest a few years ago. He spoke of his addiction with crack cocaine and his dependence on the Pusher-Man. His guidance reminds me of the lyrics in the song Amazing Grace “I was lost but now I’m found….I was blind but now I see” I thank Brother Ed and the staff of the Long Beach Rescue Mission for helping me to move forward in my life enabling me to see a much clearer path in front of me. This book Blessed by the Best details how I became homeless after traveling from Texas to southern California and shows how the three homeless shelters that I stayed in helped shape my life.

ImageThis book will show of my interaction with other homeless people who stayed at the shelters as well as those who slept out on the streets. I describe about the pros and cons of being homeless in Southern California as well as how I eventually made it back to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas to start a new life. If you would like to help me fund my book and be sure that it gets published . You can help by donating to my KICKSTARTER project account: I will have the link posted shortly. Thanks in advance for your cooperation to help make this book possible.  I am hoping that this book should be published sometime during June of this year.

Modern Proverbs and words of wisdom

I love the book of proverbs in the old testament in the bible as it enriches me with many inspirational verses that can help lead my life down a straight and narrow path

Image

Proverbs 1

New International Version (NIV)

Purpose and Theme

Image

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,[a]
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.[b]

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools[c] despise wisdom and instruction.

I have one foot here in the states and one foot in the Philippines

ImageMany times it feels as though, although physically I am in Texas, in the United States of America, I am walking with one foot firmly planted here in the states while my other foot is still planted in the Philippines. Many times I imagine myself still walking down the streets in Santa Cruz, Manila, or in the beautiful Cagayan Valley. I spent seven months in the Philippines and it was a very enjoyable vacation. It inspired me to write three books about my stay there. I will talk more about my books in future posts.
