Louis Thomas Jordan (July 8, 1908 – February 4, 1975) was a pioneering American musician, songwriter and bandleaderwho enjoyed his greatest popularity from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Known as “The King of the Jukebox“, he was highly popular with both black and white audiences in the later years of the swing era. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him no. 59 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Jordan died in Los Angeles, California, from a heart attack on February 4, 1975. He is buried at Mt. Choo Choo Ch’boogie – Louis Jordan

Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” was written by Vaughn Horton, Denver Darling, and Milt Gabler. The song was recorded in January 1946 by Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five. It topped the Rhythm and Blues charts for 18 weeks from August 1946, a record only equalled by one other hit, “The Honeydripper.” The record was one of Jordan’s biggest ever hits with both black and white audiences, peaking at number seven on the national chart  and provided an important link between blues and country music, foreshadowing the development of “rock and roll” a few years later.  Although “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” is now seen as epitomising the style known as jump blues, it was written by white songwriters whose background was in country and western music. The song is credited to Darling, Horton and Gabler. Denver Darling (1909–1981) was a “hillbilly” guitarist and songwriter,

Louis Jordan – Choo Choo Ch’Boogie Lyrics

Heading for the station with a pack on my back,

I’m tired of transportation in the back of a hack
I just love the rhythm of the clickety clack
I hear the whistle blowing, see the smoke from the stack
Pal around with democratic fellas named Mac
Take me right back to the track, Jack

Choo choo, choo choo ch’boogie
Whoo whoo, whoo whoo ch’boogie
Choo choo, choo choo ch’boogie
Take me right back to the track, Jack

You reach your destination and alas and alack
You need some compensation to get back in the black
You take a morning paper from the top of the stack
And read the situation from the front to the back
The only job that’s open needs a man with a knack
Put me right back in the rack, Jack

Choo choo, choo choo ch’boogie
Whoo whoo, whoo whoo ch’boogie
Choo choo, choo choo ch’boogie
Take me right back to the track, Jack

I’m gonna settle down by the railroad track
To live a life of Riley in a beat down shack
When I hear the whistle I can peep through the crack
And see the train rollin’ when it’s ballin’ the Jack
For I just love the rhythm of the clickety clack
Take me right back to the track, Jack

Choo choo, choo choo ch’boogie
Whoo whoo, whoo whoo ch’boogie
Choo choo, choo choo ch’boogie
Take me right back to the track, Jack

Take me right back to the track, Jack

“The Rubberband Man”

Hand me down my walkin’ cane, hand me down my hat
Hurry now and don’t be late ’cause we ain’t got time to chat
You and me, we’re goin’ out to catch the latest sounds
Guaranteed to blow your mind so high, you won’t come down, no

Hey, you all prepare yourself for the Rubberband Man
You’ve never heard a sound like the Rubberband Man
You’re bound to lose control when the Rubberband starts to jam

Oh Lord, this dude is outta sight
Everything he does seems to come out right

Once I went to hear them play at a club outside of town
I was so surprised, I was hypnotized by the sound this cats put down
When I saw this short fat guy stretch a band between his toes
Hey, I laughed so hard ’cause the man got down
When he finally reached his goal

Hey, you all prepare yourself for the Rubberband Man
You’ve never heard a sound like the Rubberband Man
You’re bound to lose control when the Rubberband starts to jam

Got that rubber band up on his toes
And then he wriggled it up all around his nose

Guaranteed to blow your mind
Playin’ all that music yet keepin’ time
Where in the world did he learn that, oh Lord
Oh, help him get away

Hey, y’all prepare yourself for the Rubberband Man
You’ve never heard a sound like the Rubberband Man
You’re bound to lose control when the Rubberband starts to jam

Rubberband Man, Rubberband Man
How much of this stuff do he think we can stand?
So much rhythm, grace and debonair for one man, Lord
And then he had the nerve to wiggle his left toe
To his knee got the feelin’ in his head, y’all, ah, come on, baby

Hey, you all prepare yourself for the Rubberband Man
You’ve never heard a sound like the Rubberband Man
You’re bound to lose control when the Rubberband starts to jam

Rubberband Man starts to jam
Movin’ up and down across the land
Got people all in his ways
Everything about him seems outta place

Just move it, just move it, just move, move, move it, just
Rubberband, Rubberband Man
Just move it, just move it, just move, move, move it, just
Rubberband, Rubberband Man
Get down, oh, get down, lover

a great song from 1972 by Timmy Thomas – Why can’t we live together

His vocals remind me a lot of Curtis Mayfield

Timmy Thomas – Why can’t we live together

Tell me why? Tell me why? Tell me why?
Umm, why can’t we live together?
Tell me why? Tell me why?
Umm, why can’t we live together?
Everybody wants to live together
Why can’t we live together?

Timmy Thomas – Why can’t we live together

No more wars, no more wars, no more war
Umm, just a little peace in this world
No more wars, no more war
All we want is some peace in this world

Everybody wants to live together
Why can’t we live together?

Can’t live, can’t live
Can’t live together
Can’t live together

Timmy Thomas – Why can’t we live together

No matter, no matter what color
Umm, you are still my brother

Umm, you are still my brother”

Everybody wants to live together

Oran Juice Jones - The rain

Oran Juice Jones – The rain

I saw you (and him) walking in the rain; you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same.

Tossing and turning another sleepless night the rain crashes against my window pane
Jumped into my car didn’t drive too far, that moment I knew I would never be the same. ‘Cause

I saw you (and him) walking in the rain; you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same.
I saw you (and him) walking in the rain; you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same.

Now here you are begging to me to give our love another try
Girl I love you and I always will but darling right now I’ve got to say goodbye. ‘Cause

I saw you (and him) walking in the rain; you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same.
I saw you (and him) walking in the rain; you were holding hands and I’ll never be the same.

Hey, hey baby how ya doin’ come on in here
Got some hot chocolate on the stove waiting for you
Listen first things first let me hang up the coat
Yeah how was your day today? Did you miss me? You did? Yeah? I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today
That’s right now close your mouth ’cause you cold busted
That’s right, now sit down here, sit down here
I’m so upset with you I don’t know what to do
My first impulse was to run up on you and do a Rambo
Whip out the Jammy and flat blast both of you
But I ain’t wanna mess up this thirty-seven hundred dollar lynx coat
So instead I chilled — That’s right chilled
Then I went up the bank… took out every dime.
And then I went and canceled all those credit cards, yeah
All your charge accounts, yeah
I stuck you up for every piece of jewelry I ever bought you!
Yeah that’s right, everything, everything,
Don’t go lookin’ in that closet ’cause you ain’t got nuthin’ in there
Everything you came here with is packed up and waiting for you in the guest room.
That’s right, what was you thinking about, huh
What you trying to prove, huh? This is the Juice!
I gave you silk suits, Gucci handbags, blue diamonds.
I gave you things you couldn’t even pronounce, but now I can’t give you nothing but advice.
But you’re still young, yeah that’s right, you’re still young.
I hope you learn a valuable lesson from this, you know
And you’re gonna find somebody like me one of these days…
Until then, you know what you gotta do?
You gotta get on outta here with that alley-cat-coat-wearing, Hush-Puppy-shoe-wearing crumbcake I saw you with. Cause you dismissed!
That’s right, Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don’t you know that.
You without me like corn flake without the milk!
This is my world. You’re just a squirrel trying to get a nut!
Now get on outta here. Scat!
Don’t touch that coat…
